Category Economy

Mauritius has earned recognition as Africa's most innovative nation by the Global Innovation Index and boasts the continent's most favorable business climate, as indicated by the World Bank's "Doing Business" report, according to a recent article in Forbes Africa's January 2024 edition.

The article highlights how Mauritiu has adeptly tailored its public policies in response to evolving economic landscapes. Shifting away from its historical reliance on sugar cane monoculture, the country strategically invested in education and research, successfully diversifying into manufacturing and financial sectors, now focusing in driving exports and revenue.

Forbes Africa further underscores Port Louis, Mauritius' capital, earning the eighth position among 231 cities in a November 2023 ranking.

"A reflection of their developmental strides, nearly forty African cities have entered Mercer's 2019 ranking of preferred places to reside. For the third consecutive year, Port Louis leads the pack. Standing as the continental champion, the Mauritian capital secures the 83rd position in this evaluation, considering factors like socio-cultural ambiance, public services, transportation, healthcare, housing, entertainment, educational quality, and personal safety. Notably, Port Louis is Africa's sole representative in the infrastructure ranking, at 94th globally, while also being hailed as the continent's safest city, ranking 59th worldwide."

Highlighted as the nerve center of a nation with the second-highest GDP per capita in Africa (surpassing $8,600 compared to the continent's average of $1,500), Port Louis embodies Mauritius' commitment to human development. It serves as the hub for economic and administrative activities, attracting significant foreign direct investments. Beyond its economic vibrancy, Port Louis boasts numerous attractions, including its oceanic setting, temperate climate year-round, rich historical and cultural heritage, picturesque seafront, and diverse architectural landmarks, earning it the moniker of a "hidden gem."

The Global Innovation Index, a collaborative effort of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD), and Cornell University, annually evaluates countries worldwide, assessing their capacity to harness innovation effectively.
